Waiting Well

It has been quite some time since I blogged.  Perhaps there are seasons in life that require so much of you that hunkering down in the moment is all you are able to do.  Perhaps holding on to hope and faith is easier to do at times when it is all internalized.  Regardless, I have felt the Lord nudging for quite some time about re-entering my blogging world.  Whether my words are only for an audience of One, or if they touch others I have never met outside of my tiny world, I must follow and be obedient.

You may ask what I have been up to in my absence.  The answer is simple….waiting.   If you were to look at my life from the outside, you might never know.  I have been content.  I have been happy….or perhaps joyful is a more appropriate word.  But through all my contentment, I have had a deep longing and overwhelming expectancy of things that God has promised me I would see, but I haven’t seen evidence of up until this point.  I have been waiting.

I would love to report that I have been waiting well.  I would love to say that regardless of what I saw, felt, or heard, I remained steadfast every moment for the last few years.  I would love to say that I have seen what I am waiting for come to fruition.  But I am unable to say any of those things absolutely.

I can say this…..I know what it is to wait.  I know what it is to wait well—to be faith-filled and expectant regardless of circumstances, knowing that God will come through in His perfect time and in His perfect way, according to His perfect plan.  I know what it is to understand that God works all things for our good, even when all things that we endure are not necessarily good.  I know what it’s like for God to use the honestly ugly and heart-wrenching things of our lives to help weave together a beautiful tapestry in our lives and in the lives of others.  (See Death of a Dream.)

On the flip side, I also know what it is to NOT wait well.  I know what it is to struggle to hold on in my own strength, and to fail miserably in my waiting well because of that.  There is a saying that is popular that goes like this: “God will not give you more that you can handle.”  This saying is so unfortunate!  A subtle twist makes it a lie….even worse, it actually promotes the idea that God gives you something expecting you to carry it.  On the contrary, Jesus said this:

“For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Matthew 11:30 NLT

If you study commentaries, many discuss the yokes that Jesus would have been discussing.  When yoking an stronger ox to a weaker or less experienced ox, a yoke designed to place the brunt of the load upon the stronger one was used.  While we are waiting, we are to cast our cares on God.

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.”                                   I Peter 5:7 NLT

Casting, according to Merriam-Webster, is to throw or move something in a forceful way, or to send or direct something in the direction of someone or something.  If we throw something or direct it to someone else, we can’t keep our hands on it.  By simple definition, we can’t continue to hold on to it.  We can’t hold on to hope and worry at the same time.  By casting our care—our anxiety, our worry—onto God, we are able to fully grab on to hope.  We are able to then pray with expectancy and with hope.   We are then able to stay in peace because we are focused on our hope in Him.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Isaiah 26:3 NLT

I understand that at times there is struggle.  Sometimes casting our care is easier than others.  But I also know when the stakes are high, and when the battle is long, casting our care can almost be a moment-by-moment thing on some days.   But I know that it is possible.

I know that you feel at times that there is no way you can possibly wait another moment.  I know there will be moments when you will want to walk away and forget it all.  But I also know that when you fix your eyes on Christ, when you place your focus on Him, His Word, His promises, He will renew your strength.  He will give you the ability to endure past anything you ever thought possible. (See Fly Like an Eagle.)  His timing is not our timing, and His ways are not our ways.  But He is omniscient.  We are not.  He sees the beginning from the end.  We do not.  He knows how to weave all of the messy pieces of our lives together, and make something that is beautiful—something that we will be able to point to in the future as evidence of His unfailing love and grace in our lives; something that will be for His glory.

We will wait.  Some days we will wait well.  Some days we will fail in our waiting well, but God is faithful to forgive.  He is faithful to empower us with His strength to continue on the journey.  One day we will see what those things for which we wait.  If you have been called to pray, to stand in the gap, there is a reason.

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia.
This is the message from the one who is holy and true,
the one who has the key of David.
What he opens, no one can close;
and what he closes, no one can open:
“I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me.” Revelation 3:7,8 NLT
Continue to hope against hope.  Continue to pray.  This is something I have been praying over my friend for the last 7 months.  I believe praying scripture is one of the most powerful things we can do.  Until you see the fullness of God’s promise come to pass, wait well, my friends.

Psalm 126
A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem,
    it was like a dream!
 We were filled with laughter,
    and we sang for joy.
And the other nations said,
“What amazing things the Lord has done for them.”
Yes, the Lord has done amazing things for us!
    What joy!
Restore our fortunes, Lord,
    as streams renew the desert.
Those who plant in tears
will harvest with shouts of joy.
They weep as they go to plant their seed,
but they sing as they return with the harvest.

You've Messed Up One Too Many Times.....

Do we really believe what we say we believe? We say:

- Jesus replied, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." ~Luke 18:27

- Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! ~2 Corinthians 5:17

- See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. ~Isaiah 43:19

Do we really believe what we say we believe? We believe that God can do anything, that nothing is impossible with God. Yet so often we only want to apply this to our own lives, and not to the lives of those that we disagree with, or that have hurt us. Church…do you really believe that God can make all things new? Then let’s believe for those that are trapped in the most unattractive sins to be set free and made whole.

What do we do when we are given a real live opportunity to love unconditionally? Do we point the finger, say that they are doing exactly what we knew they would do, and then turn our backs. Or do we try to lovingly point them to the only One that can truly change a heart? We can’t be a gracious lighthouse & an accusatory judge at the same time.

Everyone needs compassion
A love that's never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
A kindness of a Savior
The hope of nations

Savior
He can move the mountains
My God is Mighty to save
He is Mighty to save
Forever
Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as You find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender
Yes I surrender

Savior
He can move the mountains
My God is Mighty to save
He is Mighty to save
Forever
Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

Shine your light and let the whole world see
We're singing for the glory of the risen King...Jesus

Savior
He can move the mountains
My God is Mighty to save
He is Mighty to save
Forever
Author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

You were mighty to save

Moving Forward

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.” ~Isaiah 43:18-19

“I’m not going back, I’m moving ahead

I’m here to declare to You my past is over

In You, all things are made new

Surrendered my life to Christ

I’m moving, moving forward”

Lyrics from Moving Forward by Israel Houghton

So early this morning, this already seems to be the theme for the day. At this time in my life, things seem to be changing and moving forward at an almost break-neck pace. This is certainly not a bad thing….and considering the season I have recently exited in my life, it’s certainly a welcome change. However it is just that….change.

As humans, we tend to be creatures of habit. Sometimes that makes change—even good change, a little fearful. However, at this point in my journey I find that my fear is overshadowed…..this time around it feels like it is being pushed aside, and instead I find myself in hopeful expectation, anticipation, and quite honestly a sense of amazement. I’m seeing things come to pass that I felt God place on my heart in years past. I am reminded of the following scripture:

“Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love.” ~I John 4:18 (NLT)

When we focus on God and what He says, we can be confident and fear is driven away. So many of these things I felt impressed upon my heart, but I had no idea how they would come to pass, because the circumstances I saw didn’t seem to make any sense or give any hint of ability to ever change. I just had to trust God and remain faithful in the steps He asked me to take. Our obedience + His supernatural ability = miraculous changes in events. He promises to complete the work He started in each of us.

“The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” ~I Thessalonians 5:24 (emphasis mine)

My journey is far from over. There are still promises I have on my heart that have yet to be fulfilled. Continued obedience and following where He leads is key. I may not see now how those circumstances can change, but thankfully God is not dependent upon my ability to know what He knows. This is where faith enters the picture. I know that He is doing a new thing. I know He can make a way where there doesn’t seem to be one, and provision where none seems to exist. It says so in His Word. I can trust Him and follow Him so I can move forward. I trust He will guide me in respect to the details.

Is God bringing you to a new place? Ask for discernment to be able to “perceive it.” Seek His guidance and direction, and watch Him show you things that will truly amaze you.

Keeping your Past from Invading Your Future

“…”How did I get here?
I'm not who I once was
And I'm crippled by the fear
That I've fallen too far to love”

But don't you know who you are?
What's been done for you?
Yeah don't you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you've made
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes
You are more than the problems you create
You've been remade”

I often think in song. It’s an odd characteristic (I think), but nevertheless, it’s the way my mind works. While I don’t have the talent of song-writing, I admire and respect those that do. When a songwriter captures thoughts and feelings and sets them to music, it allows for others to share similar sentiments with all barriers removed.

One of the things that I do when I am actively trying to work and pray through issues is listen to music… Praise and worship to God are a huge part of who I am. I have been spending a lot of time in prayer over specific things and specific people, and so I have been walking and jogging and listening to music….a lot. Perhaps it has to do with who and what I am praying for, and perhaps it is an actual trend, but I have noticed something wonderful about such a large percentage of contemporary Christen music right now—the message of newness.

So often, people are concerned with “getting life on the right track” so they can find or return to God. We become so focused on the mistakes and poor choices that we have made, we feel we must either be forced to live in separation from a loving Heavenly Father or punish ourselves for all the wrong we have done. But there is no need for that. You see, it is our Savior that paid the price for us and makes us new.

Christ chose to take your punishment for every sin, every poor choice, every mistake. When you ask Him to be your Savior, you are accepting His payment for your sins. When we choose not to forgive ourselves and to move into newness, we are saying that what He did wasn’t enough. We are instead choosing to carry our past into our future. This causes us to be weighed down so heavily with burdens that we no longer have reason to bear.

Not one of us is too good to not need a Savior……and not one of us is too bad to not have Him serve as payment in full for what we have done and will do in this life. Take Him at His Word. When you have sincerely asked for forgiveness, He washes the memory of that sin into the sea of forgetfulness. Allow yourself to act like the One that paid the price for what you have done….move past the regrets, the hurts, the sins, the mistakes, and the poor choices and into newness of self, newness of life. Look forward to your future with hopeful expectation of a life with greater power and bolder influence to point others in the direction of the Life-Saver.

Take a moment and thank the Christ that has given you newness of life—heart, soul, and mind. Is there a song of worship or praise that echoes the sentiments of your heart? Share it with your Savior.

“Cause this is not about what you've done
But what's been done for you
This is not about where you've been
But where your brokenness brings you to

This is not about what you feel
But what He felt to forgive you
And what He felt to make you loved

You are more than the choices that you've made
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes
You are more than the problems you create
You've been remade”
